Academic
Dr LeRoy W. Mitchell taught Accounting at Iona College, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, for over 40 years. He also served as chair of the department. He attended Iona on a full academic scholarship at the undergraduate level where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He was awarded another full scholarship at that institution to pursue his MBA in Accounting. He received his Doctorate in Public Administration from the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.
Business and Professional
Dr Mitchell is a Certified Public Accountant (New York State) he is also a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), and an Accredited Estate Planner. Prior to joining the faculty at Iona College, he interned with the public accounting firm of KPMG, and worked professionally with the Ernst and Young (then Ernst & Ernst), Certified Public Accountants. After leaving Ernst & Ernst, he founded his own CPA firm, Mitchell & Pollina with his fellow Accounting professor the late Thomas M. Pollina. Dr. Mitchell served as secretary of the New Rochelle Industrial Development Agency for 15 years. He served on the board of the New Rochelle Economic Development Corporation, and president of the New Rochelle Local Development Corporation. In 2002, Dr. Mitchell was appointed by the Westchester County Board of Legislators to serve a nine year term as a trustee of Westchester Community College. That appointment was renewed in 2011 for another seven years. He continues to serve on the National board of the Association of Community College Trustees, and was National Chair in 2013-2014. He also served on the executive board of New York Community College Trustees, and continues to serve on that board. He was awarded the National Educator Award by the Association of Government Accountants in 2010. He is a past President of the Estate Planning Council of Westchester County, NY. He has been an active member of several professional organizations including American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Association of Government Accountants, Beta Gama Sigma, and the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils.
